Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe has charged its chief prosecutor for abuse of office and obstructing justice.
Johannes Tomana could face up to 15 years in prison if convicted for dropping a case against two men accused of plotting to bomb President Robert Mugabe’s dairy farm.
Nevertheless, he was freed on a 1000 US dollar bail.
Tomana’s lawyer has argued his client’s action was as an act of prosecutional function.
“The prosecutor general is independent in the discharge of his functions. Certainly that discharge in my view cannot be refused by the police, you then get into serious problems, when do they stop,” Thabani Mpofu, defence lawyer said.
Last month, Solomon Makumbe and Silas Pfupa together with two others were arrested and facing treason charges before Tomana made Makumbe and Pfupa chief state witnesses.
